The EU Priority Project No. 23, an essential part of the Baltic-Adriatic traffic corridor, starts near the pictured Westerplatte monument at Gdansk. This is where World War Two began. Its consequences allowed the Baltic Sea – Adriatic Corridor to fall into oblivion for half a century. The positive economic development of the Baltic region and the MOEL states has revived this traffic route, which is so important for Austria and Carinthia. Therefore, the Gdansk – Warsaw – Vienna section has been declared a “priority project”.
The Koralm Railway
In 2004 a Realisation Agreement was concluded between the Republic of Austria, the Federal Provinces of Styria and Carinthia as well as the Austrian Federal Railways for the construction of the Koralm Railway. The Koralm Railway has been included in the framework plan by the Federal Ministry of Traffic, Innovation and Technology.
Therefore its timely constructional realisation and the planned inauguration in 2016 can be expected as scheduled.
The future Koralm railway is part of the international railway route of the "Baltic-Adriatic Corridor" and is connected to the Pontebbana on Italian territory that has already been finished up to the borderline railway station of Tarvisio. This traffic route is an international corridor from Bologna - Venice - Udine - Tarvisio - Villach - Klagenfurt - St. Andrä - Deutschlandsberg via Graz - Semmering - Vienna - Warsaw to Gdansk.
In a "Letter of Intent" from 12 October 2006, the Ministers for Traffic and Infrastructure from the EU states of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Italy declared that they will back this corridor in the course of the revision of the TEN guidelines of the EU in the years 2009/10 and have it integrated in the EU's high-ranking railway network.

The Baltic-Adriatic Axis
The lines are becoming more closely connected. The Koralm Railway as the key project in the Baltic-Adriatic Axis will link up the countries along Europe's "Diagonal Passage" as the reinterpretation of an ancient trade route.
